Angiotensin II receptor antagonist markedly reduces mortality in salt-loaded Dahl S rats

The effect of blockade of the renin-angiotensin system on morbidity and hypertension was studied in 198 Dahl salt-sensitive (Dahl S) rats 6 weeks old given a diet high in sodium (8% NaCl) for 10 weeks. One group of 91 was treated with the non-peptide angiotensin II receptor antagonist, DuP 753, 30 mg/kg daily whereas 107 controls were untreated. Blood pressure increased steeply in both groups, and was above 200 mm Hg by week 6.
