Animal identification, key to farm automation

The relevance of electronic animal identification is discussed in terms of tracing agricultural livestock on the outbreak of diseases, preventing fraud, and farm automation. An overview is given of the techniques used, and the need for standardization of code and techniques is argued. The results of the ISO working group on animal identification, leading to proposals for code and technical standards, are presented.
