The pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, the most important vascular disease, is associated with disorders of lipid and lipoprotein metabolism. Therefore similarity of lipid metabolism of different animal species to human lipid metabolism is important. Next to primates, the pig seems to be the most suitable animal model, as its pathogenesis of atherosclerotic lesions and its plasma lipoprotein profile closely resemble those of man, if the pig is given a humanized western-style diet.
