One of the consequences of the Green Revolution in Asian lowland rice cultivation is the increased diversity of crop growth stages present at any one time on neighbouring farms. Asynchrony in planting among rice fields leads to increased losses from insects and diseases, as variation in planting effectively lengthens the duration of the crop for organisms capable of dispersing between fields. It also leads to reduced efficiency in irrigation.
