Zinc deficiency was observed in 77% of the samples collected from young alluvial calcareous soils (average free CaCO3 33.9%) of Saran district (Bihar, India), Zn deficiency increased with increasing pH, total soluble salts and CaCO3 and decreased with organic C content. Available P and K had no effects. No Cu or Mn defiency was observed, but Fe deficiency was found in 11 to 22% of the soils analysed.
