, : Ballots and bullets: election riots in the periphery, 1874-1985. Journal of Development Studies 29(3): 518-540

Modernization theory argues that the liberal institutions of the industrialized or core nations have taken root in underdeveloped or periphery ones and generated the basic elements of political development. Critics of the theory, however, suggest that core institutions represent foreign imports into the periphery and are viable only when closely managed by core authorities. This article examines the modernizationist and the critical theories on electoral stability in the periphery.
