In 1993 there were 945 beef cattle breeding herds in the former German Democratic Republic vs. 205 in 1991. There were 22 970 German Simmental, 1806 Hereford, 1425 Charolais, 1304 Pinzgauer, 990 Limousin and 839 Galloway cattle, accounting for 73.4, 5.8, 4.6, 4.5, 3.2 and 2.7% respectively of the total population, the remainder being Uzzermarker, Salers, Aberdeen-Angus and Highland cattle.
