The behaviour of female X. fenestrata was studied at a shelter containing artificial nests that were experimentally manipulated. The bees showed a high degree of nest site specificity, and during provisioning they seemed to recognize their own nest by visual and/or olfactory cues. Small positional or angular displacements of tunnels reduced nest re-occupation; large displacements (6 cm or 45 degrees ) resulted in desertion of all nests.
