Behaviour and production of sows in free-access farrowing quarters

KTBL Schrift ( 356): 167-176
Behaviour and production of sows in free-access farrowing quarters
Sow behaviour was observed in integrated group housing in which sows about to farrow or in lactation can enter or leave the farrowing pens and the farrowing quarters at will. The sows must select an empty farrowing pen. After farrowing they have to leave the farrowing section to feed in the communal area. Later they have to return to their piglets, which remain in the pens, to suckle. Time and place of farrowing were recorded in 72 farrowings over 1 yr.
