From 1971 to 1983, a genetic improvement programme was carried out by the University of Florence in Bolgheri, Livorno. The cross breeding work utilized 17 cultivars, including 12 table varieties (Aglandaou, Ascolana, Bouteillan, Giarrafffa, Gordales, Grossanne, Manzanilla, Nocellara Etnea, Picholine, Sorba, Tanche and Verdale) and 5 oil varieties (Coratina, Frantoio, Leccino, Puntino and Razzo).
