Change in yield and yield components in winter bread wheat in the course of long-term breeding in the south of the Ukraine

On the basis of a study of changes in grain yield and its components in 30 varieties recommended for cultivation in the Ukraine at various periods since 1929 and representing 7 changes in variety recommendations arising from breeding improvements, it is reported that yield has increased by 83% as a result of breeding, with an accompanying fall in height from 120 to 85 cm (the correlation between yield and height being negative, r = -0.88) and increases in grain number/ear, grain weight/ear + 1000-grain weight, but no appreciable change in the number of fertile tillers. It is recommended that, in breeding for yield in the south of the Ukraine, the main attention should be paid to grain number. The close correlations between 1000-grain weight and grain weight from the plant as a whole, from the main ear and from the lateral ears allow breeding for all these traits to carried out simultaneously.
