Changes in the veterinary profession of eastern Germany between 1989 and 1991

The total number of active veterinarians in the provinces of Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt and Thuringia fell from 3809 (3044 or 80% in practice and 765 or 20% in public service) in December 1989 to 2638 (2043 or 77.4% in practice and 595 or 22.6% in public service) in July 1991. This coincided with a shift from state to private practice.
