Native American (American Indians) youths face special challenges and concerns relating to health and wellness. Alcoholism is three times greater among this group than among other adolescents. Life expectancy is roughly five times less than for non-native Americans. In addition, some 70% smoke cigarettes and 75% are overweight. The rate of diabetes is 42% higher than for other groups. They practise self-neglect and abusive behaviour and their lifestyles are destructive.
