Combining ability and heterosis for seed oil and yield in sesame

Combining ability and heterosis for seed oil and yield in sesame

Journal of Maharashtra Agricultural Universities 17(1): 78-81

The nature of combining ability in sesame was studied in a set of 9 times 9 diallel for oil content and seed yield. Variances for gca and sca effects were highly significant for both the traits. Higher magnitude of gca than sca variance and higher gca: sca variance ratio ( gt unity) of oil content indicated that it's inheritance was predominantly under the control of additive gene action. For seed yield, non-additive type of gene action was important. High heritability (ns) was observed for oil content, but it was moderate for seed yield/plant. Mid and better parent heterosis was either low or negative for oil content while it was moderate to high for seed yield/plant. When both oil content and seed yield were considered together, the parental lines RT 54, R 84-4-2 and R84-360-3 possessed more favourable genes for both the characters. The only cross combination involving both high general combiners as parents for both the characters was RT 54 times R84-4-2. This cross is likely to throw superior transgressants for oil yield/plant as additive and additive times additive types of gene actions were involved in this cross.
