Competitive effects of grassland annuals on soil water and blue oak (Quercus douglasii) seedlings

Bromus diandrus, B. mollis and Erodium botrys were sown at rates of 10, 30 or 100 seeds/dmsuperscript 2 in 15 cm diam. x 1 m deep tubes around a single acorn. Hemizonia luzulaefolia was sown at only 30 seeds/dmsuperscript 2. Identity and density of the annual species had independent and interactive effects on the water resource level. Soil water potential was negatively density-dependent, remaining highest when oaks were grown without competitors.
