Syrup flotation process has been installed at Hwalien and Pingtung sugar mills for improving the quality of A grade raw sugar. This process requires the addition of compressed air, phosphoric acid, lime milk and flocculant, and the operation will directly affect the quality of fine syrup and sugar product. A computer control/monitor system was designed for the process to achieve automatic control of the whole procedure. The software is constructed with GENESIS control software package. Syrup flow rate, temperature, pH, and the dosage of phosphoric acid, lime milk and flocculant are controlled by the program. Stabilization of syrup flowrate is the main strategy. Signal of the syrup flowrate is fed forward to control the r.p.m. of the pumps of phosphoric acid, lime milk and flocculant. To assure the efficiency of flotation process, the system will go into (HOLD) state, if there is any variable out of control. This system was operated at Hwalien sugar mill for two years. The quality of fine syrup and sugar product was improved at least 25%. Sediment test showed that more that 56% of A grade raw sugar was upgraded from E to C and D.
