Poverty alleviation programmes have become increasingly important in South Asian countries, where the problem of poverty, particularly rural poverty, has assumed acute proportions. While poverty ratios differ among Asian countries, even for comparable periods, there is, it is contended, a striking similarity. Looking specifically at Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka, the chapter considers the targeting of the poor; land reform, wage employment, self-employment and welfare measures.
