In the context of particleboard manufacture, the theoretical principles of digital image processing are described for determining the coverage of PMDI (polymeric diphenylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanate) adhesive. Results are given of tests on the application of this technique to wood chips of Picea abies, and small sheets of P. abies and Fagus sylvatica wood. After image homogenization, the image can be broken down by empirical rules into PMDI, wood and background. The method can be used on images produced microscopically as well as macroscopically.
