Ecological and cultural management of mountain landscapes

Ecological and cultural management of mountain landscapes

Pirineos ( 140): 53-73

After reviewing the course of the author's own development as an ecologist interested in mountain and steppe phytosociology, the paper identifies two extreme forms of land management: first, 'imperialist' management conducted from a distance and using energy and mineral subsidies, which gives rise to degraded ecosystems and a depleted landscape. The other form, now in abeyance, is integrated management, with an internal dynamic based on natural systems.
