Ecological and molecular aspects of the interaction between aphids and their host plants

Secondary metabolites from plants may act on insects as allomones (defensive compounds) or as kairomones (compounds used by insects in host finding). In this paper, examples of both classes of compounds involved in aphid-plant interactions are discussed. Emphasis is given to the role of hydroxamic acids in cereals as resistance factors towards aphids. These compounds are deleterious to aphids through direct toxicity and feeding deterrency, and may prevent virus transmission. Molecular interpretations of the toxicity of hydroxamic acids are discussed.
