Ecological aspects of pastureland development in the Kalahari zone of Botswana

Ecological aspects of pastureland development in the Kalahari zone of Botswana

Problems of Desert Development (4): 26-29

The natural ecology of arid rangelands in Botswana is described and the consequences of overgrazing by cattle, sheep and goats are discussed. Rangeland degradation is attributed mainly to a communal land use system. Fodder yields of 4 t/ha have been obtained from sown stands of Lablab purpureus in the Peloshethla district.
