Ecological balance sheet for glasshouse production of tomatoes

Ecological balance sheet for glasshouse production of tomatoes

Revue Suisse de Viticulture, d' Arboriculture et d' Horticulture 25(4): 261-267

A quantitative evaluation of energy needs and pollution over the whole chain of production is presented. A reduction in heating requirements is the most urgent priority for limiting environmental damage, and this could be achieved by raising the CO2 concentration which would increase production per unit area. The use of artificial light is not energy-efficient.
