Ecological dairy farms: an example to follow

Ecological dairy farms: an example to follow

Afrique Agriculture 17(197): 34, 36

An experimental project set up in 1987, in which 8 small farms were established in the Ivory Coast, is described. The construction of the farms and the type of agriculture (dairying and yam culture) was organized in as ecological a way as possible, while still remaining profitable. Dairying was found to be more profitable than yam culture. Two crossbreeds were raised: (i) the indigenous N'Dama X Abondance and (ii) the indigenous N'Dama X Jersey.
