Ecological functions of carbohydrates stored in corms of Tipularia discolor (Orchidaceae)

Functional Ecology 6(5): 575-581

The orchid T. discolor possesses 2-5 subterranean corms containing a high concentration of total non-structural carbohydrates (TNC). The role of the corms in the initiation of new growth following seasonal dormancy, in reproduction, and in the response of plants to artificial defoliation was investigated at 2 upland hardwood forest sites near Annapolis, Maryland, USA.
