Ecological relations of trematodes infesting lariform birds in the Czech Republic

Ecological relations of trematodes infesting lariform birds in the Czech Republic

Prirodovedne Prace Ustavu Akademie Ved Ceske Republiky v Brne 27(5-6): 1

In 1963-1990 the author examined 1420 individuals of 7 species of bird of the order Lariformes, including 1292 Larus ridibundus, 3 L. minutus, 83 Stema hirundo, 38 Chlidonias nigra, 2 Stercorarius parasiticus, 1 S. pomarinus, 1 Catharacta skua. Thirty-six trematode species have been found; 11 of them, viz., Echinostoma nordiana, Himasthla militaris, Aporchis rugosus, Galactosomum dolfusii, Stictodora sawakinensis, Cryptocotyle concavum, Brachylecithum microtesticulatum, Philophthalmus nocturnus, Leucochloridium perturbatum and Diplostomum pseudospathaceum have been recorded in the Czech Republic for the first time; and a species new for science, Plagiorchis moravicus sp. nov., has been described. The ecological relations of the trematodes were studied in L. ridibundus. In young birds, changes in their trematode fauna were studied in dependence on postenbryonic development and as regards differences in their infestation in summer and autumn. In adult birds, the seasonal dynamics of the trematodes was studied in dependence on the season of the year, sex of the host bird, and wintering places. The infestation with trematodes was compared in adult and juvenile birds in various localities in the Czech Republic, and changes in the trematode fauna were studied in dependence on the degree of disturbance of pond zoocoenoses. Besides, changes in the composition of the trematode fauna infesting young birds was studied in dependence on changes in their environment, both on fishponds and in localities that are not intensely farmed. Finally, the composition of the trematode faunae was compared in L. ridibundus, S. hirundo and C. nigra breeding in the Czech Republic.
