Ecological research on a population of the heath fritillary (Mellicta athalia)

Ecological research on a population of the heath fritillary (Mellicta athalia)

Future of butterflies in Europe: strategies for survival: 172-176

In 1986, a population of Mellicta athalia was studied in the Netherlands. Although most adults had a small movement range and seemed to perceive forest as a barrier, some covered distances of up to 3 km. The presence of the larval food plant Melampyrum pratense, a layer of dead leaves, open small sheltered areas and forest edges appeared to be strict habitat requirements for this species.
