The Alpujarra, a mountainous region in the south of Granada has been classified by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food as one of the ten most socioeconomically depressed regions in Spain. The agriculture of this region is extensive and undeveloped, with most farms being semi-subsistence and family run.
