Ecology and risk management: the case for common property

Risk and tenure in arid lands: the political ecology of development in the Senegal River Basin: 293-330

This chapter analyses risk management in North Africa, the Sahara, and the Middle East, and then proceeds to discuss the theoretical revisions that need to be made in the light of the arid lands risk-minimizing perspective, and insights gained in Mauritania. The chapter contains sections on: flood recession agriculture; a critique of common property theory; the implications of the flood recession case; and a look at arid lands in the Middle East and North Africa.
