Economic analysis of finger millet (Eleusine coracana) cultivation in the hills of U.P

This study of the economics of finger millet cultivation in the Tehri Garhwal hills of Uttar Pradesh, India is based on data collected from a sample of 140 farmers. The analysis is disaggregated by three size groups of farms (<0.4 ha, 0.4-0.8 ha and >0.8 ha) and three regions (high hills, middle hills and valleys). Finger millet cultivation was not found to be economic even when taking into account only the operational costs. Human labour accounted for the highest proportion of costs.
