Economic analysis of goat rearing in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh

Large-size (above 10 goats) and medium-size (6-10 goats) flocks were better managed than the small-size (2-5 goats) flocks in the goat-breeding tracts of Mathura district. The capital investment per goat on small-size, medium-size and large-size flocks was Rs 813.56, Rs 732.02 and Rs 780.69, respectively, with an overall average investment of Rs 783.36. Taking cost A (cash costs and depreciation) into account, a goat keeper could earn about Rs 104/month from a small-size flock. The net income from the medium-size and large-size flocks was Rs 296 and Rs 616 respectively. The net income was much higher in large-size flocks than in other size flocks. The cost of rearing kids up to 3, 6 and 9 months of age was Rs 75, Rs 160 and Rs 223, respectively.
