Economic analysis of milk production on weaker section households in sugarcane tract of western Uttar Pradesh

This study of the costs and returns of milk production from buffaloes was conducted in Saharanpur district of western Uttar Pradesh, India. Data were collected for 1987 from a sample of 195 landless labour, marginal and small farm households. The average maintenance cost and milk yield per day was Rs 15.81 and 4.41 l, respectively. The free availability of sugarcane tops contributed about 10% of total costs. The per litre cost of milk production was Rs 3.07.
