Economic analysis of the effects of wheat price distortions in Pakistan: 1975-90

Economic analysis of the effects of wheat price distortions in Pakistan: 1975-90

Pakistan Development Review 31(4): 1173-1185

It is now recognized that agricultural price distortions have an inherently adverse impact on the national economy, as they stimulate a sub-optimal outflow of resources from the agricultural sector. This paper discusses the price intervention mechanism adopted in Pakistan and analyses the effects of distorted prices on the efficiency of resource allocation. The paper calculates the nominal protection coefficients (NPCs) for wheat in Pakistan, based on data collected between 1975 and 1990.
