Economic and ecological carrying capacity: applications to pastoral systems in Zimbabwe

Economics and ecology: new frontiers and sustainable development: 96-117

The term 'carrying capacity' (CC) is the source of much confusion. This paper clarifies some of the issues surrounding the distinctions between economic and ecological carrying capacity, making the implications for the policy debate clearer. The discussion is based on the findings of field work carried out in the communal areas (small scale farming areas) in Zvishavane District, Zimbabwe since 1986.
