The small-scale food processing sector typically includes home-based, family run businesses which have evolved over the years, with little access to capital and technical advice. Often based on local raw materials, these industries are a source of low-cost traditional food products in most developing countries. This agro-processing sub-sector is often one of the most neglected sub-sectors in the economy.
