Economic aspects of greenhouse horticulture: energy efficiency and CO2 emission in the Dutch glasshouse industry

The Dutch greenhouse sector is fuel-intensive. Environmental policy aims at an improvement in energy efficiency (direct energy consumption per unit of physical production) by 50% over the period 1980-2000. A new environmental plan will probably aim at a reduction in the total CO2 emission. Direct energy consumption consists mainly of natural gas. The energy efficiency of the greenhouse sector improved by 35% and the CO2 emission increased by 9% in the period 1980-89.
