The most difficult global problem of the twenty-first century will be that of feeding the growing world population without exhausting the agricultural productive capacity of the planet. Most of the world's farms are small, and the farmers are at, or close to, subsistence level. These farmers are myopic, and there are consequently serious soil erosion and degradation problems. This paper presents a regional case study, which looks at how this problem might be addressed.
