Economic aspects of winter wheat irrigation in the new economic conditions of 1991

Data on the yields of winter wheat as influenced by rotations, fertilizers and irrigation in 1986-89 are presented. Grain yields without irrigation were 6.73-6.94 t/ha and 7.15-8.14 t with irrigation. Application of 339 kg NPK did not usually increase yields compared with 294 kg. When the cost of irrigation was considered (including higher land tax and the cost of water) on a sample of 20 farms, the economic efficiency of irrigation was low, except for autumn irrigation prior to sowing.
