Economic assessment of suckling and fattening production systems in sheep

110 Karagouniko ewes were studied in their natural environment. Their lambs (n = 140) were suckled until weaned at 42 days of age (group 1) or were reared on a milk substitute given ad lib. from 2 to 42 days of age (group 2). All ewes were milked twice daily. 52 of the 140 lambs were slaughtered at weaning and the remainder were fattened to 105 days. Weaning weight and carcass quality of the lambs at 42 and 105 days did not differ between groups.
