Economic agreements on integration between countries are briefly described, with examples, and the build up to the formation in 1994 of the MERCOSUL (Common Market of the South) by Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay is detailed, including the institutional aspects of the Assuncion treaty. The general characteristics of the member countries are presented, including the present situation with regard to trade between these countries.
