Economic comparison of mechanical harvesting and hand pulling of sweet potato slips

Economic aspects of harvesting sweet potato slips were compared for mechanical and hand pulling methods. A simulation model was developed for the slip harvesting operation. Results indicate that the average cost for the mechanical method is $70.57/ha ($28.57/acre), which is close to the hand pulling cost at $70/ha ($28.50/acre) for a 40.5-ha (100-acre) farm. It is suggested that the slip harvesting machine should be owned if the acreage each year is greater than 60 ha (148 acres).
