Economic development and transformation of traditional social relations: a case study of the Viswakarma blacksmith and carpenter caste of Orissa, India

The social and economic development of certain of the non- agricultural rural groups of coastal Orissa, India, is investigated, with reference to the last few decades. The impact, on these groups of the capitalist penetration of the Indian rural economy is examined, focusing on how the positions of the groups have been altered, within the complex network of social and economic relations of the village.
