Economic development and use of free time in old age

The population of Costa Rica is ageing gradually, with the proportion of those aged 60 years or over estimated to account for 8% of the population by the year 2000 and 14.3% by 2025. In response to this, the government has introduced a programme of services for this group of citizens. The article defines free time, leisure and recreation, and describes the elements that have been found to constitute recreation and its importance for older people.
