Economic evaluation of the influence of herd sizes in dairy farming

Economic evaluation of the influence of herd sizes in dairy farming

Berichte uber Landwirtschaft 71(2): 256-269

The optimum size for dairy herds under East German conditions is investigated. Using modern technology, economies of scale appear to be maximized with a herd of about 200. Unit manpower and capital costs decrease up to this level; beyond it, rising transport, control and administrative costs reduce profitability. Despite this, farms with herds in the ranges 60-500 cows can be operated profitably with appropriate organization and production systems.
