Economic gains and social cost of West Asian migration: the case of Nachchaduwa

Marga 12(2): 1-17

Nachchaduwa is the name of an ancient irrigation system in Sri Lanka, which was renovated in the early 1920s. The focus in this paper is on Muslim hamlets in the scheme, which are at present actively involved in migration to the Middle East. The objective is to examine the wide economic and social implications of migration on the village community, identifying economic gains and social costs.
