Sociological Studies ( 6): 60-72

Social change in contemporary China started in 1949. The paper first reviews the historical changes in economic status of Chinese women from the feudal society to the present. Secondly, it looks at the participation of women in agricultural production and income distribution. Thirdly, women's penetration into various non-agricultural careers is discussed in different stages. Fourthly, the trend characteristics of changes in women's economic status are analysed.
