Economic incentives: a highly recommended tool

Economic incentives: a highly recommended tool

Resources Nairobi 4(1): 2-11

This paper reviews the part economics plays in biodiversity issues at three levels, namely international, national and governmental. Problems caused by economic incentives which over-exploit biological resources (perverse incentives) are discussed, but equally, situations where conservation has been promoted by economic measures are noted. Examples are described of such positive effects in Madagascar, Malawi, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Namibia.
