Economic issues of organic agriculture: some Italian experiences

Economic issues of organic agriculture: some Italian experiences

The environment and the management of agricultural resources Proceedings of the 24th Seminar of the European Association of Agricultural Economists EAAE, Viterbo, 24-26th January 1991: 167-179

Following an account of some recent studies on the economics of organic agriculture in Italy, the paper identifies four main issues which need to be addressed: (1) the confusion of consumers over similar e.g. low input, farming techniques; (2) the small scale, individual nature of organic farming which leads to differing economic scenarios and differing results from similar analyses; (3) the incorporation of agricultural and food policies, prices, technologies and quality differences into enterprise analyses; and (4) the role of organic farming in future reforms of the CAP given the environmental and surplus problems of current policies.
