Economic reconstruction and the experience of Ethiopian peasant communities

Economic reconstruction and the experience of Ethiopian peasant communities

Working Paper DERAP Development Research and Action Programme ( 3): 24-33

This paper starts with an assessment of the experience of rural Ethiopia over the past 15 years. State interference in rural society during this period has left the population sceptical about government, a problem which needs to be addressed. As for a Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP), it is important that peasants are not antagonized further, and that lessons learned in other African and Eastern European countries are incorporated into any package.
