Economic suitability evaluation of lands using ALES program

Economic suitability evaluation of lands using ALES program

Journal of the Indian Society of Soil Science 40(3): 527-533

Land evaluation at project level has been attempted in this study using the Automated Land Evaluation System (ALES), a computer aided program which evaluates lands according to Food and Agriculture Organization methodology. A 'knowledge base" describing four proposed land uses in term of both physical requirements and economic inputs and a 'database' describing the characteristics of land units of Singhik sub-watershed were fed into the ALES framework to infer the economic suitability classes of the land units. The suitability classes were linked to the 'severity levels' of the land qualities. Study showed that the same mapping unit may or may not have same suitability for different land utilization types.
