Economic traits of cow and buffalo milk production: a comparison

A mixed herd of 250 Sahiwal X Jersey cows and Murrah and Purnathadi buffaloes were studied. First calving occurred between 20 and 40 months of age for about 80% of the cattle, but 80% of buffaloes did not calve until over 45 months of age. Birth weight was higher in buffaloes than in cattle (24.0 vs. 19.6 kg resp.); the ratio of calves was 1:0.84 and 1:1. Calving was most frequent during winter (Nov.-Feb.) in cattle and during the rainy season (July-Oct.) in buffaloes.
